How can we help? 👋

Why is a product in my storefront in the wrong category?

Why products sometimes appear in the wrong category and how to fix it.

Products are automatically sorted into categories on your Storefront, but occasionally one lands in the wrong place. Here's how categorisation works and how to fix it.

How categorisation works

We assign each product to a category based on two inputs:

  • Your product data — the title, description, and any category information from your POS feed
  • Google's product taxonomy — the standard category tree Google uses across Shopping and Local Inventory Ads

When the data is clear (for example, a product titled "Adidas Running Shoes"), categorisation is highly accurate. For less specific titles, the system has to make a best guess.

How to fix it

You can correct a product's category yourself from your Unify dashboard:

  1. Go to the Inventory page and open Manage products.
  1. Find the product you want to change (you can search for it by name).
  1. Open the product and set the correct category. While you're there, it's worth checking the title and description are accurate too, as these are what we use to work out the category in the first place.
  1. Save your changes. The update flows through to your Storefront on the next sync.

The Inventory page also flags products that are missing key information, with quick ways to add titles, descriptions, categories, and images. The more complete a product's details, the more accurately it's sorted and the better it looks to shoppers.
